This pattern is done in a double crochet or half double crochet pattern!

Measures 19-20 inches, made it for my 4 year old. use smaller hook for smaller size or larger hook for a larger hat.

Supplies: J hook H hook Red heart black, white, orange, and blue yarn

Abbreviations: ch=chain sl st=slip stitch sc=single crochet dc=double crochet dc2tog=double crochet 2 together hdc=half double crochet

Instructions: J hook black yarn for the hat
ch 5- slip stitch to form a ring,

rnd 1. ch 3, 11 dc in ring, join with sl st. on top of ch 3. -12 sts.
rnd 2. ch 2, dc in same st. as joining, 2dc in each st. around. join with sl st on top of chain 2. -24 sts.
rnd 3. ch 2 counts as the first stitch, *2dc in next st., dc in the next stitch, repeat from *around, join with sl st. -36 sts.

rnd 5. *ch 2, dc in each st around, join sl st., *repeat. continue until the hat reaches 7 inches, sl st. fasten off. (if this is a smaller size the length will be shorter, look above for sizes and what hook to use.)

Ear flaps: If you would like to add ear flaps

Make 2

J hook, black yarn

1st ear flap, you can slip stitch onto the side of the hat with your  black yarn, begin the dc stitches, (like to have the seam in the back of the hat, so I do the ear flap on the side of the hat)

2nd flap, fold hat in half and sl st in dc directly across from the last dc from the other ear flap. follow directions below for both ear flaps.

ch 2. dc in the next 11 dc stitches, turn. -11 sts

ch 2. dc2tog. dc in the next 6 stitches. dc2tog. dc in the last st. turn. -9

ch 2. dc2tog, dc in the next 4 stitches. dc2tog. dc in the last st., turn. -7

ch 2. dc2tog, dc in the next 2 stitches. dc2tog. dc in the last st. turn. -5

ch 2. dc2tog twice, dc in last st. cut yarn and pull through -3

The braid from the center of the ear flap at the bottom, use black and blue yarn, with a sl st in the center of the bottom of the ear flap and chain 30, and sl st it off and cut yarn.

sc around the edge of the hat with white yarn

Eyes: Make 2 H hook Black, white, blue yarn Start with blue yarn ch 2
rnd 1: work 5 single crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook, sl st. -5sc
rnd 2: work 2sc in each stitch around, -10sc sl st. Change to black yarn
rnd 3: *work 1 sc in the next stitch, 2sc in next stitch, *repeat from* around, sl st - 15sc change to white yarn:
rnd 4: *work 1 sc in the next 2 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch, *repeat from *around, sl st. -20sc
rnd 5: *work 1 sc in the next 3 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch, *repeat from *around, sl st. -25 sc fasten off, weave in the ends. Place them 2 inches apart in the center of the hat, sew in with white yarn few times to make white spots for the center of the eyes.

Nose/Beak orange yarn h hook Ch 10 (chain more if you would like the beak bigger) Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (9 sc) Row 2: Sc2tog, sc in remaining sts. Repeat row 2 until 1 st remains, finish off leaving a tail long enough for sewing. place the the beak right below the eyes in the center.

You could also do this hat as a hdc hat too: Which would be a tighter stitch, I like both, dc hat is faster to do, but not as warm. Hdc pattern instead of dc pattern

Instructions: for half double crochet hat instead of double crochet black yarn, Size for a child's head (fits my 4 yr old), 19-20 inches around for the head. use larger hook for larger head or add an increased round, or smaller hook for smaller head.

J hook ch 5, sl st, to form a ring. rnd 1. ch 2 (count as one hdc), do 9 hdc in the ring, sl st. (10 hdc) rnd 2. ch 2, do 2hdc in each stitch around, continue around, without a slip stitch (start to use a marker) (20 hdc) rnd 3. *do hdc in the next stitch, 2hdc in the next stitch, *repeat around, continue around, no slip stitch or chain, (I would use a marker so you can keep track of your increased rounds) (30 hdc) rnd 4. *do hdc in the next 2 stitches, 2hdc in the next stitch, *repeat around, continue around. (40 hdc) rnd 5. *do hdc in the next 3 stitches, 2hdc in the next stitch, *repeat around, continue around. (50 hdc) rnd 6. *do hdc in the next 4 stitches, 2 hdc in the next stitch, *repeat around, continue around. (60 hdc) rnd 7. *do hdc in each stitch around,*repeat until you hat measures 7 inches long., then slip stitch. continue on for the first ear flap

I made one using a kind of bubbly black yarn, and my husband is bringing it to work for one of his co-workers daughters. I took a picture of it and now my daughter wants me to make one for her and one for her 13 year old daughter, and her 6 year old son. That was a pretty neat response.

love to see it, for the 13 yr old, i would use a j hook, and make it 7 1/2 inches long, and keep it the same for the 6 yr old.

I have seen your ear flap hats they are adorable. Was wondering if you had a pattern for a tiger ear flap hat? I have tried a few of your patterns for my kids they turned out great.
